How To Check Brake Fluid

There’s no understating how important your car’s brake system is. The proper functioning of your brakes is partly dependent on having the proper amount of clean brake fluid, but many Fremont drivers are left in the dark on how to check brake fluid. It’s a fairly simple process that is not dissimilar to checking your engine oil. In the guide below, the service center team at Lexus of Pleasanton provides everything you need to know!

What Does Brake Fluid Do?

Before we discuss how to check brake fluid, it’s helpful to get some preliminary information on what brake fluid does for your Lexus vehicle. Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid that helps facilitate movement of the brake pedal and acts as a lubricant for the brake system at large, preventing corrosion. Most Dublin car owners will find that their vehicle uses a glycol-ether based brake fluid, but silicone-based (DOT-5) and mineral oil-based (LHM) fluids are also on the market. We recommend consulting your owner’s manual for a manufacturer-recommended brake fluid type.

How to Check Brake Fluid in 3 Simple Steps

  1. Pop the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. You should find it on the master cylinder, but if you’re struggling to locate it your owner’s manual should point you in the right direction.
  2. The outside of the reservoir is labeled with “minimum” and “maximum” lines. Check the brake fluid level against these markers. If it’s nearing or below the minimum line, a fluid top-off or a complete brake fluid flush/change is necessary.
  3. While you’re at it, check the color of the brake fluid. If it resembles engine oil with a dark brown or black tinge, you’ll know a brake fluid flush is necessary.

What Color is Brake Supposed to Be?

Initially, brake fluid should be nearly clear with a slight yellow tinge. As you travel around Livermore, however, the color will change. Eventually, it will have the dark oil-like appearance we mentioned above, and it may have even picked up some contaminants. Left unattended, this can compromise the performance and safety of your brake system.

How Often Should You Check or Change the Brake Fluid?

It’s prudent to check the brake fluid each time you have an oil change, or at least once per year. As for a full brake fluid flush and change, this should happen about once every four to five years. Depending on your make and model, individual driving habits, and typical driving conditions, however, you may need to change the brake fluid more often. The next time you have an oil change at our Pleasanton service center, our technicians will be glad to check your brake fluid and make a recommendation!
