Is Lexus Owned by Toyota?

Toyota does in fact own the Lexus brand. However, Lexus has had its own operations headquarters in Nagoya, Japan since the early 2000's. Here is the unique upbringing of the Lexus brand:

  • 1983: Project F1 (Flagship One) was started by Toyota with the intention of building the best car in the word. This challenge was set by the chairman, Eiji Toyoda. Lasting several years, the project included market research in Laguna Beach, CA and studied the lifestyles of wealthy Americans.
  • 1989: With the completion of Project F1, the launch of Lexus was born. This new luxury brand under Toyota focused primarily on international markets and created a network of 81 new Lexus dealerships in the U.S.
  • January 1989: At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, sporting a 4.0L V8 engine, the Lexus LS 400 debuted, causing a stir in the luxury sedan market. Critics and consumers alike were blown away by the overall quality performance and luxurious style of the vehicle.
  • 2019: After almost 3 decades of debuting many more vehicles and expanding their market, Lexus has sold its ten millionth model.

What Country Is Lexus From?

Having its origins in Japan, Lexus vehicles are still currently produced primarily in Japan, mostly in the Chūbu and Kyūshū regions. The first Lexus was built outside of Japan in Ontario, Canada in 2003. This model was the Lexus RX 330.
